There are many reasons to love ʻōhiʻa. The moʻolelo, cultural significance, bright colored blooms. I personally love the delicate nature of the blossoms in contrast with the cute, round leaves, but I really wanted to illustrate this plant because it reminds me of my family. We have a little ʻōhiʻa tree in our yard, and it reminds me of our first trip to Hāna. We drove the winding roads with the windows down, letting the cool breeze rush in. We looked all around at the greenery and waterfalls, and my sister specifically wanted to see an ʻōhiʻa lehua tree since she was learning about it in school. We looked for glimpses of red in the trees, and eventually found one! We returned to Hāna many times after that and I always have a smile on my face when I recall these fond memories. The ʻōhiʻa is also the first to return after a lava flow, it is resilient and strong and a symbol of hope. I think many, along with myself, could use a symbol of hope like this after the tough times of this year.
