The ʻilima is the island flower of Oahu, and in June of this year, I hit 3 years of living here! Don’t get me wrong, I am a die hard Maui no ka oi representative, and I loved growing up there. When I first moved to Oahu, I always talked about how I didn’t like the traffic, the amount of people, or the rushed feeling wherever I went. However, I did spend much of my young 20’s here, and it has been quite a transformative time. I remember once trekking the mountains in West Oahu for a site visit, and I saw an ʻilima growing amongst all the brush. It showed me that there’s always beauty, and became a symbol of hope for me. Someone also gifted our family a beautiful 3-stranded ʻilima lei when my Papa passed, and it reminded me of his stories about living on Oahu and how much he enjoyed visiting. All in all, this design is sort of my apology to all the times I said Oahu sucked, you truly aren’t that bad (Maui no ka oi always and forever though)
